Interactive Brokers Stock Broker Review

Who it's actually for

Interactive Brokers is not a beginner's broker that happens to offer advanced features - it is a professional platform that has added a beginner-friendly tier. That distinction matters. If you are a serious investor who wants genuine institutional infrastructure at retail prices, IBKR is the strongest option available. If you're just starting out and want something easy, the learning curve is real and will frustrate you.

Two tiers, two very different deals

IBKR Lite offers commission-free trading on US-listed stocks and ETFs, which puts it on par with Trading 212 and eToro on headline cost. IBKR Pro is where the platform earns its reputation: tiered commissions starting from $0.0005 per share - significantly cheaper than most brokers for anyone trading more than a few lots a month. The two tiers share the same platform and global market access; the only material difference is how you pay for execution.

The TWS platform

The Trader Workstation (TWS) is the most capable retail trading platform we have tested. Direct market access, real-time risk analytics, complex options chains, a built-in algorithmic trading API, and portfolio margining are standard features. We tested execution across multiple sessions and found that limit order fills were consistently reliable, with no re-quotes. The trade-off is that the interface is genuinely intimidating - finding basic functions like dividend history or account performance required consulting documentation even for experienced users.

IBKR also offers a simpler web portal (Client Portal) and a mobile app that surface the most-used functions without the full TWS complexity. For investors who want market access without navigating TWS daily, the Client Portal is a reasonable middle ground.

Global reach no one else matches

Access to 150+ markets across 33 countries from a single account is the feature that competitors cannot replicate. European investors can trade US, UK, EU, Asian, and emerging-market equities alongside ETFs, options, futures, bonds, and forex in one place. Fractional shares are available on major US-listed stocks from $1. IPO access through the IBKR platform gives retail clients participation in new listings that most brokers reserve for institutions.

Regulation and safety

Interactive Brokers is regulated by the SEC and FINRA in the US, the FCA in the UK, ASIC in Australia, and numerous other Tier 1 authorities worldwide. The parent company, Interactive Brokers Group, is listed on NASDAQ and publishes audited annual accounts. SIPC protection covers client accounts up to $500,000 (including $250,000 for cash), with additional Lloyd's of London coverage above that. For investors who prioritise regulatory safety, the profile here is essentially unmatched in the retail space.

Where it falls short

TWS has a steep learning curve that will put off most retail investors. Customer service response times for account-level queries are slower than newer fintech brokers. Activity fees can apply on smaller IBKR Pro accounts if commissions generated fall below a monthly threshold - worth calculating before funding a small account. There is no Stocks & Shares ISA or SIPP available, which disqualifies it as a primary broker for UK investors focused on tax-efficient wrappers.

Bottom line

For active investors and traders who want genuine institutional tooling, the lowest commissions in the market, and access to 150+ global markets, IBKR is the definitive choice. If you're starting out, open an IBKR Lite account and treat the complexity as something to grow into rather than a barrier - the underlying infrastructure is worth it.
