IG invented spread betting in 1974 and remains the benchmark for experienced UK and European traders: unmatched market breadth, a genuinely excellent proprietary platform, and regulatory credibility that few brokers can match - at the cost of slightly higher charges than specialist ECN desks.
How IG ranks
IG is the broker that experienced traders reach for when market breadth, platform quality, and regulatory safety all matter at once. It isn't the cheapest route to EUR/USD, and it isn't designed for beginners who want hand-holding. But if you trade across multiple asset classes and want a single account that covers equities, indices, forex, commodities, and options - with a platform that won't embarrass you - IG is the most complete offering in the retail CFD and spread betting space.
IG's sweet spot is the active retail trader who has outgrown their first broker. You know how to read a chart, you understand margin, and you want more than vanilla EUR/USD. IG's 19,000+ markets means you can trade FTSE volatility indices, weekend cryptocurrency markets, and EM currency pairs from the same account and the same platform. UK-resident traders also get the significant tax advantage of spread betting, which IG handles better than almost anyone.
It is less well suited to pure forex scalpers looking for raw ECN spreads and zero commission. IG is a market maker on most instruments, and its spread-only pricing model means the headline EUR/USD spread of 0.6 pips during London hours compares unfavourably to specialist ECN desks that offer sub-0.1 pip raw spreads plus commission. If your entire strategy depends on shaving fractions of a pip, IG isn't your cheapest option.
IG's proprietary web platform is the reason experienced traders stay. Unlike most brokers where the "proprietary platform" is a thin wrapper with a better logo, IG's has real depth: integrated ProRealTime charting (premium-grade, available free with 4+ trades per month), Reuters and Morningstar news feeds, a screener that spans asset classes, and a DMA order routing option for equities that gives direct exchange access. The order ticket is clean and fast; requotes on liquid instruments are rare in normal market conditions, and IG's published execution statistics show over 99% of orders filled at the quoted price.
MT4 is available for traders who rely on automated strategies or have years of chart templates they don't want to rebuild. TradingView integration was added more recently and works well for traders already in that ecosystem.
The mobile app is one of the better ones in retail CFDs: watchlists, alerts, full order management, and chart drawing tools all sync correctly across devices. This sounds basic, but a surprising number of brokers still get it wrong.
EUR/USD spreads average 0.6 pips during the London/New York overlap and widen to around 0.9 pips in the Asian session - both figures are in line with or better than most market makers at similar scale. Major indices like the UK 100 and Wall Street carry a 1-point spread during market hours.
IG charges no deposit fee and no withdrawal fee on standard methods (bank transfer, debit card, PayPal). The cost that catches traders off guard is the inactivity fee: £12 per month after 24 months without a trade. This only applies if you genuinely stop trading, but it's worth noting if you run a long-term account alongside active trading.
Overnight financing is calculated at a standard rate tied to LIBOR/SOFR benchmarks. It isn't exceptional either way - roughly in line with the market average for a market maker of this size.
IG Group is listed on the London Stock Exchange (LON: IGG) and regulated across 11 jurisdictions, including the FCA in the UK and ASIC in Australia. UK retail clients are covered by FSCS protection up to GBP 85,000 and benefit from negative balance protection mandated by ESMA rules.
Client funds are held in segregated accounts at tier-1 banks. For traders worried about counterparty risk, IG's public listing and annual reporting provides a level of transparency that offshore-registered brokers simply cannot offer.
The onboarding process is thorough to a fault. Verification takes longer than at smaller brokers, and the account application asks for more documentation than you might expect for a standard retail CFD account. This is partly a function of operating across multiple regulated jurisdictions - it's not arbitrary bureaucracy - but expect a wait of one to two business days if your documents require manual review.
Customer support quality is inconsistent. Live chat is responsive during UK business hours; user feedback on forums including Trade2Win and Reddit's r/Forex consistently reports longer waits and shallower answers outside those hours. The telephone support line handles account and settlement queries well but isn't a substitute for specialist trading desk access.
Forex traders who want interbank-style execution should note that IG's retail forex offering is spread-only market making, not DMA. The DMA option exists for UK equities, but forex clients are trading against IG's own book. Execution is fast and reliable, but it isn't the same structure as a true ECN.
IG is the benchmark for experienced UK and European retail traders who want breadth, platform quality, and regulatory credibility from a single account. If you trade across multiple asset classes or want spread betting without switching brokers every time you expand into a new market, there isn't a more complete option at retail scale.
If your sole focus is lowest-cost forex execution, or you're a beginner looking for structured education and a simple interface, there are better-value alternatives. But for the trader who has been through a few brokers and knows what they actually need, IG earns its position.
