A genuinely different model

eToro didn't build a forex broker and bolt on social features - social trading is the product. The CopyTrader system lets you automatically mirror the open positions of any of the thousands of strategy providers on the platform, proportionally and in real time. You set the allocation, choose your providers, and the system handles execution. This is a legitimate and well-implemented alternative to trading yourself, and it's been refined over 15+ years.

Multi-asset in one account

eToro supports real stocks, ETFs, and crypto alongside CFDs and forex from the same account and the same interface. For traders who want a single platform to hold a basket of Apple shares, some Bitcoin, and a short EUR/USD position, eToro is the most complete retail option at this price point.

Who it suits

Investors who want diversified exposure across asset classes with a social layer that helps them learn from experienced traders. New traders who want to observe - and partially replicate - how a profitable trader is positioned in real time. It is not suited to active forex scalpers: EUR/USD spreads average around 1.0 pip on retail CFDs, which is not competitive versus ECN brokers. There is no MT4 or MT5, no raw spread account, and no API.

Costs

Spread-only pricing: EUR/USD averages 1.0 pip, crypto spreads are 1%, equity CFD spreads are on the wide side. There is no deposit fee, but there is a USD 5 fee on withdrawals and a USD 10 monthly inactivity fee after 12 months without login. The currency conversion fee - charged when you fund in a non-USD currency - is 1.5%, which adds up for European clients depositing in EUR.

Regulation

FCA (583263), CySEC (109/10), and ASIC (491139). Additionally licensed in multiple EU jurisdictions. UK clients get FSCS protection; EU clients get ICF coverage via CySEC.

Where it falls short

The FX cost structure makes eToro uneconomical for active currency traders. The USD 5 withdrawal fee and 1.5% conversion fee add friction compared to ECN brokers where both are zero. Customer support has faced public criticism for slow response times during high-volume periods.

Bottom line

eToro is the platform you recommend to someone who wants diversified exposure, is interested in social trading, and doesn't have the time or inclination to trade actively. It is not a tool for professional forex traders.
