How Gemini ranks
Gemini was among the first cryptocurrency exchanges to obtain a NYDFS BitLicense, the most rigorous state-level crypto regulatory framework in the United States. It also holds FinCEN Money Services Business registration and operates under the oversight of the New York State Department of Financial Services, which requires annual audits, capital requirements, and cybersecurity standards that most exchanges globally do not meet. For institutional investors and compliance-sensitive US clients, this regulatory depth is unmatched among native crypto exchanges.
Gemini's Proof of Reserves programme is audited by Deloitte, one of the Big Four accounting firms, making it the most credible reserve attestation in the US market. The audit confirms that customer assets held on-platform match corresponding liabilities on a dollar-for-dollar basis. This is a meaningful step beyond the Merkle tree self-attestations used by most exchanges.
Gemini operates its own institutional-grade custody product, Gemini Custody, which holds a qualified custodian charter under New York trust law. ETF managers, hedge funds, and sovereign wealth entities use it for regulated crypto custody. SOC 2 Type II certification has been maintained continuously since 2017. Gemini holds approximately 97% of assets in cold storage with multi-signature controls and geographically distributed vaults.
Gemini ActiveTrader provides a full order book with Level 2 data, TradingView charting integration, and maker/taker fees starting at 0.20%/0.40% for new accounts. Fees decline with volume. Stablecoins trade at zero fee. The exchange supports approximately 70 coins, covering all major assets with a deliberately conservative listing policy.
Gemini Earn (where available) allows users to earn yield on crypto holdings through third-party lending integrations. Note that following the Genesis/Earn insolvency in 2022, Gemini overhauled its Earn product and has taken steps to compensate affected users through a settlement. The exchange also offers recurring buy features and a crypto rewards credit card in the US.
Coin selection (~70 assets) is narrower than Binance, KuCoin, or MEXC. Not available in all US states and has limited international availability outside the US, UK, EU, and a handful of other markets. Trading fees at base tier are higher than offshore competitors.
For US-based investors who want regulatory certainty, institutional-grade custody, and the strongest reserve attestation in the market, Gemini is the most credible native crypto exchange. It is not the cheapest or most feature-rich, but on the dimensions of compliance and trust, it sets the standard.

I've been using Kraken for a few months now and while I trust them overall, I feel like they could up their game on the fees. The staking rewards are pretty good, but honestly, the selection of coins could use some love. I like the platform for trading, but sometimes it feels a bit clunky compared to others. I'd still recommend it, but just know it's not perfect.
