VPS (Virtual Private Server)

BeginnerTrading Technology
Last reviewed on May 3, 2026

A remote server on which a trading platform - usually MetaTrader - runs 24/7, ensuring uninterrupted trade execution and low-latency connectivity to the broker.

A Virtual Private Server is a cloud-hosted computer accessible over the internet that runs a trading terminal continuously, independent of the trader's own hardware. For algorithmic traders and anyone using Expert Advisors, a VPS ensures the EA operates even when the trader's local PC is off, during power cuts, and through internet outages. Because the VPS maintains a persistent connection to the broker's servers, pending orders and position management continue without interruption.

Latency is the second major consideration. Premium trading VPS providers co-locate their servers in the same data centres as major brokers and liquidity pools - LD4 in Slough (Equinix) for European brokers and NY4/NY5 in New Jersey for US-based operations. A VPS in LD4 may achieve a round-trip latency to a London-based broker of under 1 millisecond, versus 50–200 ms from a home connection. For strategies where timing matters - scalping, news trading, latency arbitrage - this difference is decisive.

Many brokers offer free or subsidised VPS services to clients above certain deposit or volume thresholds (typically 3–5 standard lots per month traded). These are usually Windows-based servers accessible via Remote Desktop Protocol. Third-party VPS providers (Beeks Financial Cloud, ForexVPS, AxiTrader VPS) offer more customisable environments and guaranteed uptime SLAs, at a monthly cost typically ranging from USD 20 to USD 100 depending on RAM, storage, and server location.

For non-algorithmic traders who manage positions manually but hold trades overnight or over weekends, a VPS is less critical - but it can still provide peace of mind that stop-loss orders will trigger correctly if the home connection drops during a major news event.
